You can start lessons at any age- even in your 70’s or 80’s! Younger children may take a little longer to grasp the basics, while older beginners may progress faster but might face challenges with other commitments.

For beginners, 30-minute lessons are usually sufficient. As students progress, longer lessons (1 hour) may be beneficial to cover more advanced techniques and repertoire.

Learning the violin is a gradual process. With consistent practice, students usually develop a good sound and basic technique within the first few months. Progress depends on age, practice frequency, and personal dedication.

Regular, consistent practice is far more important than long, occasional sessions. Short daily practice sessions are highly effective for building technique and improving steadily.

No prior music experience is needed. Whether you’re picking up the violin for the first time or returning after a break, lessons are tailored to your level. Beginners start with the basics, and more experienced students can build on what they already know.

We offer lessons every weekday from 2pm to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. If your child finishes school earlier than their lesson time, school transport is welcome to drop them off at our studio, where they can wait comfortably until their lesson begins.

When purchasing a violin, it typically comes with a bow and rosin (make sure to confirm with supplier). A shoulder rest is highly recommended to make holding your violin easier. Depending on your budget, you might also consider: Fine tuners for each string (helps with easier tuning) Violin tuner (for self tuning) Jane Lane Studios does assist with installing fine tuners and strings if needed.

Reputable suppliers include Marshall Music and Lovemore (online or in-store). Recommended violin brands include Sander, with a range from entry level to professional models (more expensive). As a start, for beginners, an affordable entry-level violin is ideal to gauge interest before investing in a higher-end instrument. The entry level price range for violins is between R2000 and R4000. Second hand violins are sometimes available from antique shops, Facebook marketplace and shops like Cash Crusadors for around R1000 – quality may vary. We understand that buying your first violin can be daunting and we are happy to provide assistance.

That’s okay! We do offer an affordable rental solution for students who can’t afford a violin right now or would simply like to check if violin is something they enjoy and would really like to commit to; before plugging further money into it. You are welcome to contact us for further details.
