What age can I start violin lessons?
You can start lessons at any age- even in your 70’s or 80’s! Younger children may take a little longer to grasp the basics, while older beginners may progress faster but might face challenges with other commitments.
What is the duration of each lesson?
For beginners, 30-minute lessons are usually sufficient. As students progress, longer lessons (1 hour) may be beneficial to cover more advanced techniques and repertoire.
How much will my first violin cost?
The entry level price range for violins is between R2000 and R4000. Second hand violins are sometimes available from antique shops, Facebook marketplace and shops like Cash Crusadors for around R1000 – quality may vary. We understand that buying your first violin can be daunting and we are happy to provide assistance.
What equipment do I need?
When purchasing a violin, it typically comes with a bow and rosin (make sure to confirm with supplier). A shoulder rest is highly recommended to make holding your violin easier. Depending on your budget, you might also consider: Fine tuners for each string (helps with easier tuning) Violin tuner (for self tuning) Jane Lane Studios does assist with installing fine tuners and strings if needed.
Do I need prior music experience?
No prior music experience is needed. Whether you’re picking up the violin for the first time or returning after a break, lessons are tailored to your level. Beginners start with the basics, and more experienced students can build on what they already know.
